A unique collection of rare mass songs by Salil Chowdhury, written between 1944 and 1951,  has at last been published after extensive research and overcoming unprecedented obstacles by Gautam Choudhury, the creator of the website www.salilda.com , the most authentic and complete reference site for all admirers of “Salilda”.

The principle singers include the members of Bharatiya Gananatya Sangha (Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association) with students of Rabindra Bharati University providing the harmony. Some of the best musicians from Kolkata participated in this recording, which took nearly two years to complete. The music is arranged by Dr Goutam Ghosh,head of Instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University who knew Salil Chowdhury quite well and has an excellent understanding of his musical style.

“For the last twelve years I have been searching and collecting Salilda’s many unpublished songs from the ’40s.  During these years (’44-’51) he composed a number of songs – nearly all of them are Mass Songs with strong political message.  Lyrically and musically they remain unparalleled. In total I found around 30 such songs. Sadly none of them were ever recorded or released.

I decided to record 12 of these songs back in 2008 and after two years of hard work and several recording sessions in India the CD was finally ready. We have used some of the best musicians for this album and the voices are by the Indian Peoples Theatre Association IPTA members and the students of Rabindra Bharati University.

This CD will not be available in any record shop. Since it is a salilda.com offering it can be obtained for a small fee from a few Salilda admirers who have volunteered to stock this CD. “
